In a rage, Oedipus declares that Tiresias and Creon must be plotting against him. Suddenly terrified, Jocasta begs him to stop, and then runs off to the palace, wild with grief. The priest describes the plague that is destroying the city — a blight on the land causing famine and sickness.
The quest for truth collapses into a battle of wits and words, with Oedipus bragging of his victory over the Sphinx instead of pursuing the murderer of Laius.

The Oedipus Trilogy was originally written by Sophocles and is meant to be told in a story-telling fashion. Sophocles' audience already knows that Oedipus is himself the murderer, but the characters onstage have no idea of the truth. Creon tries to avoid the will of the Fates by getting Oedipus to come back to Thebes so he can save it from being taken. Bewildered and insulted, Oedipus is persuaded that Creon set this up intentionally and blames Creon for attempting to assume control over the honored position. He ends up plainly humiliated of this discovery notwithstanding all the safety measures that were taken by King Laius and his wife to avoid the prophecy being fulfilled and at last its fulfillment comes true. Prophecies are bound up with fate, with things being predetermined. He never Hamlet vs. As the play opens, the citizens of Thebes beg their king, Oedipus, to lift the plague that threatens to destroy the city. In his dying moments, the hapless villain realises that, in seeking to avert the prophecy, he had, in fact, helped it to come true. He then decided to move from Corinth and Merope and on the way where the three roads meet, there came a man who offended him. When we begin to read this story, we must remember that Greek society was based around myths and legends. Note especially the dramatic irony of Oedipus' determination to find and punish the murderer of Laius. What does all this mean, when we stop and analyse it in terms of the interplay between fate and personal actions in Oedipus the King?
